Lights on St. Paul to Light West Wichita with Over One Million Lights!

The Arc of Sedgwick County (The Arc) will again present the state’s largest neighborhood drive-thru Christmas light display this holiday season. The 13th annual Lights on St. Paul is a donation-funded event that brightens the Wichita holiday season for a few weeks each year. The donations collected at the event allow The Arc to run its programs and initiatives that brighten the lives of local residents with developmental disabilities and their support systems throughout the year.

“The Arc’s Lights on St. Paul is the most unique light display in Kansas because nearly all of the displays and features are hand made by our volunteers including those we serve,” said Kevin Fish, executive director of The Arc of Sedgwick County. “The Arc is blessed with volunteers who share their talents and energies – giving thousands and thousands of hours each October, November and December to make our display so bright.”

The Arc is currently building and programming this year’s display and will flip the switch on just over one million lights, musical-timed displays and a dancing water fountain at 5:30 PM on Thanksgiving night (Thursday, November 25, 2010). The community is welcome to drive through the display every evening through Monday, December 27, 2010.

The spectacle starts at the corners of Douglas and St. Paul on Wichita’s West Side and runs for one-half mile along St. Paul and through the parking lots of The Arc and the Independent Living Resource Center (ILRC). The festivities begin nightly at 5:30 PM, and run through 9:00 PM Sunday through Thursday, 10:00 PM on Fridays and Saturdays and 11:55 on Christmas Eve. Pictures with Santa and other surprises will be available on weekends and select evenings.

The Arc is asking community members, groups and businesses to donate time to help finish the display and to volunteer directing traffic and taking donations during the event’s evening hours throughout the holiday season. Sponsorship opportunities are also available.

The 2009 Lights on St. Paul viewed by nearly 85,000 people and nearly $35,000 in donations from visitors and sponsors went directly towards serving the community. The Arc supports thousands of local residents living with developmental disabilities through major programs including case management, family respite services and hundreds of special projects including day trips, educational seminars and social events. The Lights on St. Paul has become increasingly important to funding The Arc’s work. The economy, state and local budget cuts and greater challenges to traditional sponsor organizations have made this year’s event more important than ever.

The Arc hopes, weather permitting, to welcome 100,000 people this year and hopes to raise $50,000 in event proceeds.

Individuals interested in following Lights on St. Paul progress can “follow” the festivities on Twitter (@LightsOnStPaul) and “like” the event on Facebook (search for “The Arc of Sedgwick County”). Sponsorship and volunteer opportunities can be discussed with The Arc’s Kevin Fish at (316) 943-1191.
